Voice and tone

How Seeds of Renaissance sounds, with the key lines to reuse and examples to copy. Part of the SoR design system. The substance (who we are, why, for whom) lives in brand.md; this page is the applied version: what to actually write.

Status: reviewed 2026-10-13 (Rufus). Lines marked decided come from brand.md or a later decision. Everything else is a proposal.

The voice in one line

A poet-philosopher who thinks clearly. The lyrical leads, rigour grounds it. We speak from within the moment, not above it, with kind authority and gentle curiosity. People should feel held, not lectured.

The feel is the same as the visual system's: grounded hope. Not doom, not naive optimism; hope that has done the hard thinking.

Rebirth on headlines, renewal in argued prose (decided 2026-10-12, Rufus; replaces the 2026-10-08 rule where renewal was the default). Use rebirth on all headline lines: the tagline, the media house line, the podcast intro, hero and banner lines. It has a punch renewal doesn't. Renewal stays acceptable in papers, essays and other argued prose. Renaissance belongs to the name and to poetic copy. Decision record: planning 2608.

The media house line

The line for the podcast, the YouTube banner and channel line, and the About text. It is not the tagline: the tagline speaks for the movement, this line for setting out, exploring, with crisis named alongside rebirth. It must be on-brand but also powerful, accessible and resonant. Reasoning and the options considered: voice-notes.md.

Line (renewal changed to rebirth 2026-10-12; kept 2026-10-13 for the 16 Oct podcast page; Sylvie finds it weak and a redo stays open as design-34t.39): Exploring crisis and rebirth in this time between worlds. The options considered and why: voice-notes.md.

The ladder. Write the description first and cut down. The description spells out what between worlds means, so the short rungs can stay poetic.

RungText (with D)
Description, 2–3 sentencesSeeds of Renaissance is a conversation exploring crisis and rebirth in this time between worlds: why our civilisation is coming apart, and what might emerge in its place. We talk with thinkers, artists and practitioners about making sense of this moment and practising what comes next.
Spoken introThis is Seeds of Renaissance, a conversation exploring crisis and rebirth in this time between worlds.
BannerExploring crisis and rebirth in this time between worlds.
YouTube channel lineExploring what comes next, one conversation at a time. (decided 2026-10-13; about setting out, not the movement, so it is not the tagline)

Keep civilisational (the adjective) for the tagline and papers (the tagline reads "civilisational rebirth"); on short lines worlds, or the noun (our civilisation), carries the scale more lightly.

1 lineFor those who sense the old world is ending and want to help seed the new.
2 sentencesSomething is ending, and many of us feel it before we can name it. Seeds of Renaissance is a movement of people making sense of this moment and practising what comes next, together.
A paragraphThe 2-sentence version, then: We make a podcast, a printed magazine and essays, and we gather: monthly calls, courses, and gardens of people seeding something where they live.

Principles

  1. Start from the feeling, not the conclusion. People come to us sensing something before they can name it. Name the sensing first.
    • Do: Something is ending, and you feel it before you can name it.
    • Don't: The metacrisis requires a civilisational paradigm shift.
  2. Lyrical opener, lucid body, clear invitation. One image or line that lands, then plain explanation, then what to do next.
  3. Honest, not hyped. Admit we haven't figured it out. No superlatives, no urgency tricks, no "transform your life".
    • Do: We don't have the answers. We're working them out together.
    • Don't: Join the movement that's changing everything.
  4. Plain words on the way in. Entry pages (home, about, offers, navigation, YouTube titles) avoid insider words: metacrisis, interbeing, metamodern, sensemaking, liminal. Keep them for the manifesto, magazine and essays, where they can be earned.
  5. Grief and possibility in the same breath. Don't skip the dark to get to the hope; don't stop in the dark either.
    • Do: Like doulas, we witness the last breath of a dying past and the first breath of a future being born.
  6. Concrete over abstract. Say what happens: a call, an hour, a garden, a printed magazine, €35 a year.
    • Do: An hour together, online, once a month.
    • Don't: A transformative space for collective emergence.

YouTube and podcast

Video titles: the guest's name and the idea, in plain words. 40–60 characters. A colon is fine; clickbait isn't.

The titles below are illustrative, not real episodes.

  • Iain McGilchrist: Attention Is a Moral Act
  • Dougald Hine on Living at the End of a World
  • What Is Trying to Be Born? A Talk at Gardens of Change

Thumbnail text: three to six words, taken from the episode itself (a phrase the guest actually says), never a summary or a question we answer with "you won't believe". It must still read at 168px wide.

  • Attention as a moral act
  • We are already practising it
  • What is trying to be born?

Description opener (first two lines show in search):

[Guest] joins Rufus Pollock on the Seeds of Renaissance podcast to talk about [idea in plain words]. [One line on why it matters now.]

Seeds of Renaissance: vision and movement for civilisational rebirth.

What we call people

(2026-10-12, Rufus and Sylvie.) Two layers, kept separate. Reasoning: discussion, under 2608.

Public words (what we say outside)

StageWord
DiscoveryNo label. Newcomers aren't named; we invite: "come explore", "join a call", "take a course"
CommittedCatalyst and pioneer, for the people actually planting the seeds (public documents, the manifesto)
DroppedSeed-bearers (too weak)
In reserveDoulas, possibly for a deeper circle later; not in public use

Do: "Come to a call and explore with us." Don't: "Join 400 explorers." (People don't want a box while they are still discovering.)

Internal journey stages (team only)

  • Explorer: newcomer; comes to a call or course. Never a public label.
  • Catalyst: active participant, e.g. hosts or runs calls.
  • Pioneer: deeply committed.

You start as a catalyst and become a pioneer. This layer is for the journey, funnel and later CRM tags; it is not launch-blocking. "Catalyst" is also a programme name (calls and catalysts), which fits: catalysts run calls.
